Heavenly Ski Resort – FSC
January 12-19, 2008

by Bob Thompson

Our merry band of 27 skiers made it out to Lake Tahoe in great time, just after an eight foot dumping of snow the week before, and just in time to have beautiful blue skies and mild temperatures.  There were 545 Florida skiers there that week, and most of us stayed at Harvey’s Casino, the site of all the parties.  The accommodations were very nice, with each room having a lakeside view.

The airline worked without a hitch as did the bus trip from the airport.  We were very pleased with the service from both the carriers.  Everyone got checked in and we all made the registration event.  The skiing was beautiful, almost too warm, and definitely a sun tan hazard!  The parties were a treat with fantastic food and a DJ beyond belief!  The crowds danced both nights ‘til closing time and the food was incredible.  Jacksonville qualified for the competition for the FSC Cup Race, but didn’t make the top three ratings.  Our fastest female skier, and recipient of the Beth Chancey award was Joy Jones, and the fastest male skier and recipient of the President’s Award was Jay Miller, who again also acted as the race captain for our team.

The Thursday night party had a theme of California Dreaming.  We had several great costumes, one even winning the Judges’ Prize for the Best Costume.  It was our own Gerry Goradesky, dressed up as a Hare Krishna!  Peace to Everyone!  Ohmmmm!

We had a great arrival party for our group at the Hard Rock Café where we watched the first half of the Jaguars/Patriots game.  At the end of the week, we had a farewell party at the Cabo Wabo in Harvey’s where we had great Mexican food.  Several awards were given out to our racers and to others who had achieved some degree of notoriety or infamy!

The flight back was an overnight flight stopping at Denver before getting us back into Jacksonville just after 5 AM on Sunday morning, exhausted, but exhilarated!  We had only one injury to Leah Mantle, who sprained her ankle.
