February 28-March 7, 2009
Ogden Fun & Ski Week 2009
by
Steve Bratcher
Eighteen members of the JSC,
including several new members, traveled to Ogden, Utah during the week
of February 28th – March 7th to explore the
front range of the Wasatch Mountains. The group was part of an
organized ski trip hosted by SkiGroup.net, which had more than 12
different clubs from across the country with a total of 180 skiing
enthusiasts.
Our “base” during our stay
was at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Ogden, said to be one of the
oldest settlements in Utah. The town is approximately 20 miles from
two great ski areas – Snowbasin & Powder Mountain, each offering its
own unique terrain and level of hospitality. Snowbasin is very plush
and has a boutique feel to it, while Powder Mountain was more of the
locals hill with a “no frills” atmosphere….albeit incredible skiing.
Upon arrival, JSC hosted a
Pizza Party at what ultimately became our favorite hang-out – Brewskis.
This was an excellent time for everyone to get to know each other and
plan for their skiing together and the start of some great
friendships.
Beginning the next day, the
entire group was chauffeured each day in private motorcoaches to and
from the mountains, which made the travel-time pass by before we knew
it. We began our skiing in Snowbasin in what were certainly springtime
conditions, with highs in the upper-40’s. The next day we ventured to
Powder Mtn, where the conditions were slightly improved. We skied
Snowbasin 3 times and Powder Mountain, or “PowMow” as the locals call
it, twice. Mother Nature finally came around and provided us with
fresh powder for our final two days of skiing.
On Tuesday, our tour
operator arranged for NASTAR skiing and a competition among all
participants. JSC is proud to have claimed several NASTAR medals,
with our own Craig Smith achieving the single-best time and earning
the #1 slot for all male participants. Craig was followed closely by
Jim Werner who was only a fraction off of Craig’s time and took home
the #3 award for male skiers, with someone from Grand Rapids taking
second. As for the women, JSC took a clean-sweep of the event, with
Patsy Kegebein earning the top award, followed by Diane Werner at 2nd
place, and Natalie Grosz (who skied NASTAR for her first time) earning
the 3rd slot. Who says Floridians can’t snow ski???
Our week was jam-packed
with other off-mountain events and gatherings, including a catered
dinner with entertainment at the Union Station, complete with private
access to 4 museums housed at the station. We also visited the
Salomon Center, a huge entertainment complex complete with a bowling
alley, rock-climbing wall, simulated skydiving, miniature glow-golf,
and indoor surfing. JSC hosted a dinner on Wednesday evening at
Roosters where we had an incredible dinner. Thanks to Sally for
arranging the location. Other events included a Pub Crawl, with a
comedy club performance finishing out the night, as well as an Après
Ski Party complete with dinner and prizes to round out the week.
All in all, a great group
of folks, incredible itinerary of events, and LOTS of fun on and off
the mountains.
