Deer Valley, UT
February 28 - March 7, 2009
Trip Leader: Debi Andrews
Deer Valley- It’s still #1!
On February
28th, nine happy skiers arrived at the Salt Lake Airport.
Unfortunately, two travelers had a change in plans and arranged to
come a few days later. After a very short 35 minute bus ride and a
quick stop at the market, we arrived at our spacious, with lots of
stairs to get you in skiing shape, Lakeside Condos. Hal C. was out
there a few days early to ensure that all the arrangements and lodging
suited our needs, and as all the skiers were traveling as singles,
that was not an easy task. That night we all met over Pizza and
planned our next few days.
The week started
off very warm, but conditions were still very good; Deer Valley is
noted for its grooming. A few took the mountain tour; Pat C. had
private lessons and made a breakthrough on the slopes. The
mid-mountain lodge was spacious with a wonderful choice of soups,
salads, sandwiches, pizza or hot entrees with plenty of tables. This
became the regular mid-day gathering point for the rest of the week.
The personal favorite for Debi and Michelle was the turkey chili! Out
in front of the lodge, when weather permitted, was the “beach”, a
large cluster of white lounge chairs on the snow where you sat and
soaked up the sun. On the mountain you road chairs over, or skied
past some awesome houses. The most impressive was Charlie Gibson’s
large round house sitting atop the mountain. No, he did not invite us
in.
Sunday Lisa M.
arrived. Missing a day on the slopes, she tried to catch up and took
a “header”. A trip to the clinic and a few stitches in her lip and
she was back in business. It didn’t stop her skiing, or sipping her
fine red wine through a straw!
Our two brave
and swift skiers, Hal and Michelle, took on the NASTAR course and won
silver medals, congratulations! We “Après Skied” at Stein Ericson’s
lodge, where we shared cheese fondue and wine. It was like being in
Europe in the Alps and Gabrielle felt right at home. Some day when we
win the lottery maybe we could afford to stay there. At a price of
$1,000 / night, it was beautiful. Tuesday night John B. our last
weary traveler, arrived much to the delight of Mike L .
High winds on
Wednesday, made the day, for those who didn’t take it off as a
shopping day in town, a tough one on the chair lifts. Hal and
Michelle ventured over to the challenges of Alta. Unfortunately,
after arriving late, John had a fall and ended up at the clinic with
crutches.
That night,
after dinner at mid-mountain, we were greeted by SNOW!! So happy, we
proceeded to have a snowball fight. The conditions improved with the
snow that continued into Thursday. Pat C. most improved so all those
private lessons paid off.
Thursday night,
sadly missing Cyndi who came down with the flu, we had the meal of a
lifetime, the “Fireside Buffet” at the Empire Lodge. Each station was
at a fireplace and featured the likes of raclette, a Swiss specialty
cheese scalded by the fire, dried meats, rabbit stew, and lamb roasted
over the fire and of course dessert fondues! John fared well with
support as a buffet is a bit difficult on crutches!
A final
gathering for dinner on the last night at Zoom, Robert Redford’s
restaurant was a wonderful way to end the week. Unfortunately “Bob”
(as everyone in Deer Valley refers to him) was not in town.
It’s all been
documented by many pictures which we all shared and enjoyed at our
hostess, Lisa’s beautiful house during our post trip party. We tried
to recapture the ambiance with a sampling of “raclette” a Swiss
specialty that you all must try.
The group
welcomed two new club members, Gordon and Jim! I’m sure they will be
back for another trip with us next year.
Time to plan for
next year!
